Tharu community urges to guarantee Tharu rights

LAHAN: Intellectuals have expressed their complaint that the political parties, media and government bodies have not made any effort for the uplift of Tharu caste, however the country is striding towards change.

At a workshop organised here on Friday by Tharu NGO Federation on 'Rights of indigenous nationalities and inclusion', they voiced their concern that nobody has made any attempts to enhance the overall status of Tharu communities of Nepal.

Tharu intellectual Shambhu Lal Chaudhary demanded with the sides concerned to guarantee the rights of Tharu community, which has been lagging behind in Terai.

Lawmaker Laxman Mehata stressed the need to put focus on constitution drafting process in a serious manner.

Hari Narayan Chaudhary of the UCPN-Maoist said none's rights will be defended if the constitution is not promulgated on time.

Journalist Santos Subedi said the main mission of the journalism sector is to create pressure to bring the constitution-drafting and peace processes to logical end.

Chairperson of Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), District Chapter Raudi Chaudhary presided over the programme.

PALPA:The Unified CPN-Maoist declared a Magarat Autonomous State amid a programme in Palpa district headquarters Tansen today. Speaking at the programme, Maoist General Secretary Ram Bahadur Thapa aka Badal termed the declaration a historic one and said it will go a long way in ensuring an autonomous Magarat state through the new constitution. Badal had declared a Magar state on December 17, 2009 as well.

Nepali Congress and CPN-UML leaders were also present at the programme and so were the Magar people from more than 50 districts. A Constituent Assembly member from the UML, Thama Maya Pun, expressed confidence that the declaration will press the state to carve out a Magarat state. She stressed the need to work for the development of all indigenous and suppressed people, rather than working for the development of a particular place and community. NC leader Bhim Kumari Budhamagar stressed the need to empower the Magar people. Earlier, Magar participants clad in traditional attire had made rounds of Tansen bazaar.
